FAQ

IELTS CBT — common questions

What the computer-based test involves, and how practice here compares to the real thing.

What is IELTS CBT?
IELTS CBT (Computer-Based Test), also called computer-delivered IELTS, is the version of the IELTS exam taken on a computer at the test centre instead of on paper. The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections are completed on screen — you type your Writing answers and click or type your Reading and Listening answers — while the Speaking test is still done face-to-face with an examiner, exactly as in the paper-based version.
Is IELTS CBT easier than the paper-based test?
Neither format is easier — the content, question types, timing, and difficulty are identical. The difference is entirely in how you interact with the test: typing on a keyboard versus writing by hand, and using on-screen highlighting versus a paper booklet. Candidates who type quickly and accurately often find CBT more comfortable; candidates who prefer handwriting essays may prefer the paper-based test.
How many questions are in the IELTS Reading and Listening sections?
Both the Reading and Listening sections have 40 questions each. IELTS Academic Reading gives you 60 minutes across 3 passages, and Listening gives you roughly 30 minutes across 4 recorded parts, played once through headphones in the CBT format.
How is the IELTS Writing task scored on this platform?
Your Writing Task 1 and Task 2 responses are scored by AI against the same four criteria IELTS examiners use — Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy — giving you an estimated band score and specific feedback on what to improve. This is a practice estimate to guide your preparation, not an official IELTS result.
Is this an official IELTS test?
No. ExamPass is an independent exam-preparation platform and is not affiliated with IDP, the British Council, or Cambridge Assessment English, the official IELTS partners. This is original practice material built to match the real IELTS CBT format, intended to help you prepare — your official IELTS score can only come from a test booked through an authorised IELTS test centre.
How is the overall IELTS band score calculated?
Your overall band score is the average of your four section scores — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — each scored from 0 to 9, then rounded to the nearest whole or half band. For example, section scores of 7.0, 6.5, 6.0, and 7.0 average to 6.625, which rounds up to an overall band of 6.5.
Is IELTS CBT practice free on ExamPass?
Yes — the first test set is free to try in full, with no card required, so you can experience the real CBT interface before deciding to upgrade. Full access to every practice test set is available from ₦7,000 per month or ₦30,000 as a one-time lifetime payment.
